Position Summary
The Director for Parent and Family Engagement is an integral part of the Division of Student Affairs and reports directly to the Associate Vice President. This position is primarily responsible for leading efforts to cultivate and maintain strong relationships with parents and families of students, serving as a key resource and support system throughout their journey at the University. In collaboration with both student affairs and campus-wide partners, this position serves in a critical role by acting as the primary point of contact for the parents and families of all students enrolled at the University of Georgia. This position fosters a supportive environment for parents and families which enhances the university experience for students and contributes to their success. The Director will supervise and manage the work of one full time Senior Coordinator.
Additional Requirements
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Background managing large-scale programs and events.
  • History with various forms of mass communications.
  • 5 years of experience in higher education, student affairs, or a related field, with a focus on parent and family engagement preferred.

  • Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to connect effectively with individuals from differing backgrounds.
  • Ability to use sound judgment and discretion while addressing complex issues.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, including the supervision and development of staff and/or student employees.
  • Knowledge of current trends and best practices in parent and family engagement within higher education.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across various departments and divisions to achieve strategic goals.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed, depending on planned or unplanned unit priorities.

Departmental Oversight and Communications:
  • Develops and implements strategic initiatives to engage and support parents and families of students, from enrollment through graduation.
  • Oversees and executes various parent and family engagement events, including campus visitation events, informational sessions, and other programming.
  • Leads assessment and data reporting efforts for the department, analyzing this information to inform strategic goals related to parent and family programming, communication, and additional unit priorities.
  • Collaborates with university departments and stakeholders to ensure alignment of parent and family engagement efforts with overall student success initiatives.
  • Utilizes multiple communication channels (e.g., email newsletters, social media, and other online platforms) to disseminate information and maintain regular communication with parents and families.
  • Communicates with faculty and staff both within Student Affairs and across the entire university about parent and family related issues.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with campus partners, including Admissions, New Student Orientation, Student Care and Outreach, University Housing, Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS), and Financial Aid to effectively support parents and families.

  • Provides leadership and supervision to all staff and student employees involved in parent and family services programs.
  • Directly supervises the Coordinator for Parent and Family Engagement.
  • Actively promotes and participates in the development, retention & engagement of each staff member.
  • Provides guidance and professional development opportunities to staff and student employees.

Administrative and Operations:
  • Develops, oversees, and reconciles departmental operating, programming, and foundation budgets.
  • Serves as an active and engaged member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team, attending monthly meetings and additional division meetings as required.
  • Supports departmental, divisional, and university strategic goals and initiatives through service on various committees or task forces as required.
